CANADA AM
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2001 REALLY EARLY
TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA
GIRL: And she joins us in the studio
GUY: You can clap for Amanda!
(a whopping 15 member audience does a great job making some noise)
GUY: Alright, alright
AMANDA: Tell them to them clap and then 'shut-up shut-up!'
GUY: I want to ask you this, Amanda, because I was on the website, reading, and when you released your first album you said you did that to hone your skills, you released Tuesday's Child to improve your skills, what's the story behind this one then?
AMANDA: This record is all about me. And it's rooted in my desire to sort of, I think give people greater access to a chunk of my personality
GIRL: Is it true? All these stories?
AMANDA: Yeah, they're all true
GIRL: Wow. Interesting stuff
GUY': Was that tough for you to do though? Sit down and just kind of let everything about you out on paper and song?
AMANDA: No, actually, it's funny cause it's, it takes a little bit of guts I think to sort of step forward and talk a little bit about yourself, lay yourself out, and its a different record too, so to step out on a creative limb, you're always taking a little bit of a risk, some people are going to dig it, and some people won't, but, oddly enough, it was the easiest record I've ever made, and it was the fastest record I've ever made, and I think that's because it's true. I think when it's real, that's not only what people connect to, I think it's what they, I think, um, it makes it easier fo rme as a write and as an artist, it makes it easier for you to kind of step forward and kind of do your thing. Because it's not pre-fabricated
GIRL: Did you find you actually had to ditch stories you had so many?
AMANDA: No, we actually, the record was written sort of as a chunk, we wrote it beginning to end, there was only one track, Marry Me, which we're going to do today, that was written before this record. But this was the first record that I've written beginning to end that I have created and conceived in the studio, which was new for me, and it was great, cause it all came out sort of together, and I think it's sort of the conceptual thread that runs through the record, makes it very cohesive
GUY: Does everybody have a story?
AMANDA: Sure! Don't you?
GUY: Well...
GIRL: Yeah, but you don't want to hear his story
GUY: No, ha ha ha, but, you were asking people to send you their stories on your website, are people doing that?
AMANDA: Yeah, there's a thing on the website, we're sort of asking people to--I'm really interested to know a) what people think of the record, 'cause it's such a departure and b) um, the idea that you never know who's sitting next to you on the bus, or in history class, you know, the things that make us unique and individual, are, what make us unique and individual
GIRL: So your next cd is here's your story? (laughter)
GUY: Anyways, you're going to do, what is it, Everybody's Got A Story for us now?
AMANDA: We are
GUY: Amanda Marshall!
---EVERYBODY'S GOT A STORY---
GIRL: Of course, George Harrison passed away yesterday, talking about his legacy, Amanda Marshall we have right here with us in the studio today, do you have any memories, as an artist, or stories that you wanna tell?
AMANDA: Yeah, well, I mean the Beatles, you know, obviously, are a huge influence on any musician worth their salt, and I grew up listening to their music like anybody else did. I think probably my most, as sad as it is, my most vivid memory is when John Lennon died. And it's amazing to think now that there are really only 2 surviving Beatles, it's astounding. My most vivid memory is that they stopped school the morning that John Lennon died, I went to a private school, and our music teacher was a huge Beatles fan-
GUY: More of Amanda coming up in the next half-hour
AMANDA: Oh
(how rude:))
--EGAS plays in background--
GUY: That's the latest single from Canadian music sensation Amanda Marshall
GIRL: You can hear the audience, everybody's got a ton of questions about her new CD 'Everybody's Got A Story"
GUY: Yes, and we have a special guest question here for you. Joan Rivers ladies and gentlemen is going to take your question
(audience cheers as Joan appears from the side of the audience. Everyone's a bit shocked and amused. Too funny)
JOAN: First of all, first of all, this is the audience, it's so pathetic
GIRL: It's early! Cut us some slack!
JOAN: It's like my relatives. Come on stage with us. Second of all, I didn't get a dressing room you bastards (slaps host) So I used hers, and she's so sweet
AMANDA: I've seen Joan naked
JOAN: And she got so nauseous. I was in there putting on my mike pack, and someone walked in and I went "NO!!", and it was only her dressing room, and she said "That's okay, that's okay"
GIRL: Go back to that human cloning analogy
JOAN: Yeah, just slap it on and see what grows. See what grows.
GIRL: Isn't that so like a new song Amanda?
GUY: Spit in a petri dish and see what grows
AMANDA: Deep poetry
GUY: So we would like to know, some people have questions, you're a professional--
JOAN: So I should go and ask some questions
GUY: Yes--
JOAN: Okay, here we go
GIRL: You can find out what they're wearing
JOAN: So you want me to ask questions
GUY: Yup, ask them what they're wearing
JOAN: (looks at guy) Ugh, I can't do it. Hello my darling. Now you have a question or are you going to tell me what you're wearing
GUY #2: I do. What I'm wearing? uhh
JOAN: You look fine for at home. All of you--look, I don't want to tell you what. It's generational, it really is
GIRL: Is it?
JOAN: And you're missing out on the fun of dressing up, you guys just don't get it. When you go to the theatre in those stupid flaps, oh. So go ahead. What's your question. Are those your teeth
GUY #2: (laughing) Yes, those are my teeth
JOAN: We should clone them
GUY #2: Yeah, we should. Um, Amanda, releasing your album, now and as an artist, what do you aspire to as an artist, what are the dreams that you're seeking out right now?
AMANDA: Um, I think for people to know that it's the real deal. You know, that this isn't sort of the pre-fabricated version of me, or that this whole notion that everybody's got a story is a gag. Cause it's the real deal, and talking about this record has been really easy because of that.
GUY: Joan, uh sorry, we need Amanda to start the song Double Agent, or we won't get the whole thing in!
JOAN: Oh, alright!
GUY: Amanda Marshall!
--DOUBLE AGENT--
GUY: Alright, Amanda Marshall now ladies and gentlemen. Now I wanted to ask you how you got here this morning
AMANDA: How I got here this morning?
GUY: Yeah, how did you get here this morning
AMANDA: Well, I drove
GUY: No I heard your dad drove you
AMANDA: Oh, well he did
GUY: Now I can just see, he'll be out infront of the CTV studios just kind of standing around
AMANDA: With my bag. He doesn't stop, he just kind slows down and I just get out and roll..
GUY: Well, I mean, your parents have been tremendous throughout this whole thing now haven't they
AMANDA: Yeah, they're really, my parents are cool. You know, I'm an only child, and we're like a team. My dad's like, you know, my dad's got the big car with the soft seats and the bum warmers so I always try to get him to drive me around whenever I'm in town
GIRL: Your toys are in perfect condition
AMANDA: Yeah, exactly. Stacks and stacks of old report cards
GIRL: What is it about this cd that you're most proud of?
AMANDA: Um, I think the fact that I kind of went out on a limb, and it just worked out really well. I don't know it it was luck or, it was a little bit of hard work, but um it wasn't a lot of hard work. The thing I'm proudest of is the fact that, I think it's really cohesive peice of work, it's a really complete cd. Each song stands on its own but you can sit down and listen to it from beginning to end, with your headphones on, lying on the bedroom floor, and read the lyrics, you know.
GUY: So what are you, what are you going to do for us now?
AMANDA: We're going to do Colleen
GIRL: Good, oh that's great
GUY: Wait a minute, oh that's Colleen, I saw him first, okay (pulls out cd)
AMANDA: Colleen, I saw him first
GIRL: And did you really have a best friend named Colleen?
AMANDA: I did have a best friend named Colleen
GIRL: I love this song
AMANDA: She's changed her name so I can sing about her now
--COLLEEN (I SAW HIM FIRST)--
GUY: On the show this morning, uh Joan Rivers was here, Depak Shokur, and of course Amanda Marshall
GIRL: Now, of course, George Harrison passed away late last night, Amanda Marshall and the gang are going to perform for us
GUY: His composition, Here comes the sun. Thank you Amanda Marshall
GIRL: Bye everyone
--HERE COMES THE SUN--
